Tension in Delta Community Over Killing, as Soldiers Ban Speedboats.
Palpable tension continues in the Delta coastal community of Ogulagha in Burutu local government area of the state, over the alleged killing of a youth by a soldier guarding oil installations at the Forcados terminal.
The youth identified as 27-year-old Endurance Oweiye was said to be hunting for snail late in the night with six others before he was allegedly shot at by the soldier when he tried to run out of fear.
The community youth president ThanksGod Iyaragba who has since fled the community as a result of the threat by some soldiers to arrest him, confirmed the killing of the snail hunter to our correspondent, saying the deceased was shot at close range twice by the soldier around 11pm while others escaped.
Boat transporters with speed boats carrying engines with 200 horsepower have been banned from the waterways by soldiers.
This according to the community leader is to allow only canoes and boats with smaller engines on the waterways until normalcy returns.
The Nigerian Army three battalion at Effurun refused to comment on the issue, while calls to the Director Army Public Relations Brig. Gen
Onyema Nwachukwu and messages were not returned.
When contacted, the Delta police spokesperson Edafe Bright said normalcy have since returned to the community through the Bururu DPO, while journalists who intend traveling by speedboat to the community were prevented by soldiers at the Mila waterside.
