LAGESC REMOVES ILLEGAL STRUCTURES BENEATH CMS BRIDGE

LAGESC REMOVES ILLEGAL STRUCTURES BENEATH CMS BRIDGE

As part of concerted efforts aimed at ensuring the general cleanliness of Lagos environs in line with global best practices, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has effected the demolition and removal of illegal structures under the CMS bridge.

The Corps Marshal of the Agency, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu, (rtd), made this disclosure at the Command Headquarters, Bolade-Oshodi, noting that the exercise was in response to petitions received about the activities of street traders and miscreants around the CMS axis and under the Eko Bridge.

Akinpelu explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had also given a directive that the refrigerators and cold rooms constructed with illegal connections under the bridge be dismantled to avoid a repeat of the Apongbon bridge incident, adding that other illegal structures were also dismantled and carted away by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

She also directed that the cleared area be sustained by operatives of the Agency stationed around the CMS axis, warning that anyone caught returning to the location for illegal trade will be dealt with in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.

While calling for voluntary compliance with the State Environmental Laws, Akinpelu charged street traders and hawkers to desist from displaying their wares for trading under bridges, pedestrian bridges, walkways, setbacks, sidewalks, road verges and medians, stressing that such untoward behaviour negatively affects the environment and impedes the free flow of human and vehicular movement across the State.

The Corps Marshal also enjoined pedestrians to be safety-conscious by using pedestrian bridges, just as she advised owners of private and public property to have a valid waste collection contract for proper waste disposal to foster cleanliness in the State.

“You’re Blinded By Hatred, Femi Adesina Fires Back At Bishop Oyedepo.

You’re blinded by hatred for Buhari – Femi Adesina fires back at Bishop Oyedepo

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Tuesday said the founder of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, harbours hatred for the president.

Adesina said Bishop Oyedepo is blinded by his hatred for President Buhari.

Recall that Oyedepo had described Buhari’s government as the most wicked and corrupt in the history of Nigeria.

Speaking during a church programme, Special Prayer for The Nation on Monday, Oyedepo had lamented the level of hardship imposed on Nigerians through corruption.

According to Oyedepo, the Federal Government claimed to be fighting corruption, but the officials are also corrupt.

He said the N80 billion allegedly stolen by the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris would be enough to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which led to the shutting down of schools since April 14.

Reacting, Adesina said Oyedepo doesn’t understand the difference between the Accountant General and the Auditor General of the Federation.

In a tweet, Adesina wrote: “The bishop at Ota can’t even get his facts right. Blinded by hatred for PMB, he says Auditor General stole N80bn.

”This place is a talent killer, President Buhari Has Been A Disaster In The Management Of Diversity – Bishop Kukah

President Buhari Has Been A Disaster In The Management Of Diversity – Bishop Mathew Kukah

Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah has given his opinion on how the country is being managed under the Buhari-led administration.

In an interview with Channels TV, Kukah who is a strong critic of the government of the day alleged that President Buhari has been a disaster in the management of Nigeria’s diversity. He went further to accuse the President of being blatantly nepotistic.

Speaking on the state of the Nation, Bishop Kukah said;

”This place is a talent killer. You cannot treat young people like this and think you have a future. So the contestation, the volatility will persist. We may conduct elections, we will go through the motions but we are not expecting.

This is the only country where you ask yourself, what are the qualification people bring to the table? Papers are the last thing.

People are coming because they say ‘it is our right, it is our turn’, but it is not our turn to do good. It is our turn to make up for the marginalisation of our people.

The things I am saying against this President are two and I have stood by them, I have a lot of respect for him but he has been a disaster in the area of managing diversity and blant nepotism. it is morally reprehensible. And I stand to be corrected. Are the things I am saying not true?”

When asked if he fears for his own safety, Bishop Kukah said;

”When people talk about fear, I say fear of what? The only thing I am afraid of is to break the law and I leave with it everyday. The only thing that can give me a sense of fear is that I have broken the law. Short of breaking the law, I will fear a human being or fear what? I have not abused anybody. Even my worst critics will concede that I have never insulted anybody.”

Kwara Muslims Want Schools’ Rename With Religious Names.

Kwara Muslims Want Separate School Assembly For Muslim Students, Rename Schools’ With Religious Names

Kwara State Muslim Community has suggested that the names of all schools formerly owned by Muslim and Christian proprietors in the state should be changed as part of solutions to the lingering hijab crisis in the state.

The Muslim community, in a letter addressed to the State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, recommended six actions to be taken by the government in resolving the issue of hijab-wearing by female Muslim students in all public schools in the state.

“The Kwara State Government should change the names of all schools formerly owned by both the Muslim and Christian proprietors by adding’ Government’ into them, e.g, Ansarul Islam Government Secondary School, Ilorin, Bishop Smith Memorial Government College, Ilorin,” the community stated in the letter.

The Muslim body also demanded adequate compensation for the family of the late Habeeb Idris allegedly killed on February 3, 2022, during the hijab crisis that rocked Oyun Baptist High School, Ijagbo in Oyun Local Government Area of the state.

Other demands of the Muslim community as stated in the letter are that “The Kwara State Government must build a new school mosque for Muslim students/ teachers of Bishop Smith Memorial College, Ilorin to replace the one demolished.

The Kwara State Government must enforce freedom of worship in our schools by ensuring that separate devotions are held for Muslim and Christian students at the school assembly, and no external Imam or Pastor should be allowed to participate in morning devotion aside from the school teachers.

“The Kwara State Government should ensure, henceforth, that appointments and postings of principals into all schools should be based on merit and seniority and should be the sole responsibility of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission instead of former proprietors as it is being done now.”

Court Sentences Abba Kyari’s 2 Co-Defendants To Six Years In Prison

Court sentences Abba Kyari’s 2 co-defendants to 6 years in prison

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced two drug traffickers, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwane, who were linked to the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari, to six years imprisonment.

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by trial Justice Emeka Nite, convicted Umeibe and Ezenwanne on counts 5, 6 and 7 of the drug trafficking charge the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, preferred against them.

It will be recalled that the duo, who were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu while attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country, were on March 7 arraigned before the court alongside DCP Kyari and four other police officers- ACP Sunday J. Ubia, Insp. Simon Agirigba, Insp. John Nuhu, and ASP Bawa James.

Both Umeibe and Ezenwanne had upon their arraignment, pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charge against them.

Though Justice Nwite initially adjourned to review facts of the case against them, however, at the resumed proceedings on Tuesday, the NDLEA, through the Director of its Legal Department, Mr. Sunday Joseph, informed the court that it has entered into a plea bargain agreement with the two defendants.

Mr. Joseph, therefore, persuaded the court to adopt the terms of the plea bargain deal as its judgement against the defendants.

Consequently, Justice Nwite, in his judgement, convicted and sentenced the two defendants to two years jail term on each of the three-count charge against them.

However, the court, which noted that the two defendants were remorseful, held that the sentence would run concurrently, commencing from the date they were arrested.

More so, the court, held that the defendants should forfeit their international passports in accordance with section 30 of the NDLEA Act, Cap M30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

In line with the plea bargain agreement, the court, okayed Umeibe and Ezenwanne to testify as witnesses in the trial of DCP Kyari and the other accused police officers, even as it ordered the NDLEA to ensure their safety in any Correctional Facility of their choice.
