US President Joe Biden Issues Federal Pardon To Thousands Convicted Of Marijuana Possession

President Joe Biden announced Thursday he will take executive action to pardon thousands of people convicted of marijuana possession under federal law.

Biden said he would also encourage governors to take similar action with state offenses and ask the Department of Health and Human Services and the Justice Department to review how marijuana is scheduled, or classified, under federal law.

The president’s action, a significant shift in the federal government’s approach to marijuana policy, is a step toward making good on his marketing campaign commitment to decriminalize marijuana.

“Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit,” Biden said in a statement.

“Criminal records for marijuana possession have also imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. And while white and Black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, Black and brown people have been arrested, prosecuted, and convicted at disproportionate rates.”

A senior administration official said that over 6,500 U.S. citizens were convicted of simple possession of marijuana under federal law from 1992 to 2021 and that thousands more were convicted under a Washington, D.C., code. No one is in federal prison solely for simple possession of marijuana, and most marijuana possession convictions occur at the state level, the official said.

Federal law classifies marijuana as a schedule 1 drug, the same as heroin and LSD.

Nineteen states and Washington, D.C., have legalized marijuana for adults over age 21, and 37 states and Washington, D.C., have legalized medical marijuana. Five states — Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota — are voting in November whether to legalize marijuana for adults.

According to a senior administration official, thousands of people with prior convictions for marijuana possession are denied housing, employment or educational opportunities. “This pardon will help relieve those collateral consequences,” they said.

The Justice Department said in a statement that it would take steps to issue people certificates of pardon in the coming days.

The president’s decision comes just weeks before the midterm elections, in which Democrats are defending their slim majorities in both the House and the Senate. A Gallup poll in November found that 68% of Americans support legalizing marijuana.

The House passed legislation in April to legalize marijuana nationwide, but the bill faces a murky future in the evenly split Senate.

Ex-Aviation Minister, Fani-Kayode Withdraws  Attempted Murder Suit against Estranged Wife

Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday dismissed an alleged attempted murder suit brought by a former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode against his estranged wife, Precious Chikwendu.

The dismissal of the suit followed it’s dramatic withdrawal by the former Minister.

At Thursday’s proceedings slated for arraignment, Prosecution counsel, Mr John Ijagbemi, told Justice Ekwo that he has the instructions of the Inspector General of Police IGP to discontinue with the matter.

“The matter was slated for re-arraignment of the defendants today.

“However, we want to plead to your lordship for the withdrawal of the case,” he said.

Ijagbemi informed the court that the Federal Capital Territory  Commissioner of Police was in receipt of a letter from the nominal complainant (Fani-Kayode) about his intention to withdraw the case.

He said the withdrawal of the charge was provided for in Section 108 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

Lawyer to Ms Chikwendu and other defendants Mr Peter Abang, did not oppose the request prompting Justice Ekwo to dismiss the suit.

In an amended 14-count charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/01/2022 dated and filed on April 28, Chikwendu was the 2nd defendant in the matter.

Other defendants in the trial include Emmanuel Anakan, Prisca Chikwendu and Osakwe Azubuike as 1st, 3rd and 4th defendants respectively, while others are said to be at large.

Speaking to newsmen after the proceedings, Abang described the withdrawal of the suit as “a welcomed development.”

On his part, Ijagbemi said “the complainant, via the prosecution, has the unfettered power to withdraw a charge before the court.”

He said with the provision of ACJA, 2015, a charge could be withdrawn even until judgment against any of the defendants or accused persons standing trial before the court.

The lawyer said the ex-minister, in his withdrawal of case letter, said that “the whole family members had sat and amicably resolved the matter without any rancour or recourse to previous occurrences and they are happily standing and living together in love and in harmony

“And we, being an institution of government saddled with the responsibility of protection of lives and property, seeking peace and order in the society including individual family, we are glad to apply for the withdrawal of this case against the defendants.

“You all know that it is the family that is really involved and we are interested in the peace and tranquility of the family and that is why we have withdrawn it and it is our pleasure.”

“Prosperity Gospel Has Damaged a lot of Human Beings” ~Benny hinn

“I think it’s an offence to the Lord, it’s an offence to say give $1,000. I think it’s an offence to the Holy Spirit to place a price on the Gospel.”

“I’m done with it. I will never again ask you to give $1,000 or whatever amount, because I think the Holy Ghost is just fed up with it.”

“What was troubling is the mentioning of amounts connected to some blessing that should come back just because you gave.”

“It just got out of hand; give a thousand to get whatever, a hundredfold. I, myself, said [those things] and my heart was saying different.”

“What if that hundredfold never came back? What does that do to their faith? What does it do to his future and her future? And then, if it doesn’t come, that life is damaged,”

“I’ve had people come to me and say, ‘please, don’t say it again, it’s not working in my life.””

“Sometimes you dismiss it, other times you just don’t know what to say or do. But, it has damaged a lot of people.”

“How long do I have on this earth? What am I going to do in the next twenty years? That is for me to decide.”

“I want to make sure that the next 15-20 years of my life, that my message is the cross. The real call on my life.”

“I want to be known for that. I don’t want to be known as the prosperity teacher.”

“Prosperity is one thing in the Bible, there’s a whole lot more in the Word of God than prosperity but it’s become a major issue now because of the gimmickry involved in it. That needs to stop.”
